Don Gilchrist Family
The Gilchrist legacy began with Mr. Don Gilchrist, a proud 1971 Van High School graduate, who founded Door Controls USA in Ben Wheeler, Texas. With hard work, determination, and vision, he built a company that has grown into a nationally respected leader in the commercial door industry.
In the early years, Don was supported by his late wife, Sharon Gilchrist, whose dedication and encouragement were instrumental in laying the foundation of both the family and the business. Later in life, Don’s wife Sandy Gilchrist (VHS Class of 1977), also a Van High School graduate, joined the family and continues to be a strong part of their legacy.
Don’s children—Summer Derrick (VHS Class of 2000), Paxton Gilchrist (VHS Class of 2004), and their sister Shea Gilchrist (VHS Class of 2003) carry forward the values instilled in them as Van ISD graduates. Summer’s husband, Mikey Derrick (VHS Class of 2000), proudly stands alongside the family in their tradition of leadership and service. Sadly, Stacey Gilchrist Lamb (VHS Class of 2001), beloved sister to Summer, Paxton, and Shea, passed away in 2019, but her memory and legacy continue to inspire the family.
While Summer and Paxton continue Don’s vision through leadership at Door Controls USA, the entire Gilchrist family is proud to represent the spirit and tradition of Van ISD.
The Gilchrist family has been unwavering in their support of Van ISD students, staff, and programs. Through scholarships, sponsorships, and countless contributions, they have invested deeply in the future of Van students. Their generosity includes support for the Van ISD Education Foundation, the Vandal Athletic Booster Club, the STEAM Bus, Vandal Baseball, the Vandal Fishing Team, the VHS Cheer program, the Van ISD Back to School Staff Celebration, and Teacher Appreciation events.
Today, Door Controls USA employs 67 proud Van High School graduates out of its 270 employees, a true testament to the Gilchrists’ belief in building opportunities close to home.
The Gilchrist family’s story embodies the true spirit of Van ISD: hard work, innovation, community, and giving back.
